For me, a big part of wanting to get rid of old work is that I currently feel like my artwork is evolving quickly and I don't want to be bogged down by old projects and ideas. I suppose that some of that comes from a certain insecurity about the quality of my artwork, but I also think it helps to get rid of ideas that have already been explored and move on. Having said that, I do have a "bone yard" in my studio of ideas that didn't quite work out but that I liked enough to hang on to, perhaps to try again someday.
I guess life is like that, too. Sometimes you just need to stop and take stock of what you have, what you need and what you need to let go. There have been a lot of changes in my life of late and somethings have been let go in favor of new opportunities. I've also had some new opportunities come up in old places, like my position at the community college. I have recently started working with the new ceramics chair and, while she is definitely going to run things differently than they have been in the past, I am excited to see the changes that she is making and I feel that she is someone who can be a really positive influence to my work as it evolves during grad school.
What about you? How do you feel about change? About out with the old and in with the new?
