While there is nothing wrong with taking a store bought item and altering or customizing it, that certainly does not make it handmade. I think this is a great affront to those of us who do make items by hand to be competing with, well, Michael's crafters who do not take the time and effort to learn the skills necissary to make something by hand and it would be nice to have an online site that recognizes that.
I don't have a problem with people taking store bought things and altering them to make them custom, but I do have a problem with people trying to pass those things off as handmade. That simply smacks of a lack of integrity and a disrespect for true handcraft.
So, there's my rant of the week...maybe someday I will have to actually do something about this and start my own handmade/handcrafted website. One with integrity, not just a crafting free for all.
Go ahead, search for handmade items on ETSY. Let me know what you think.
