The piece on the left is inspired by the Nigerian sculptor, Lawson Oyekan. Oyekan was born in London in 1961 but grew up in his parents' native Nigeria . In 1983 Oyekan returned to London to study at the Central School of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art. He spends his time at his home in London and his studios in Denmark and Nigeria. The pieces pictured are reminiscent of the tall termite mounds found in parts of Africa.
The piece on the right was inspired by the decoration on a Funerary vessel from Ghana from the twentieth century that is in the collection at the Newark Museum. This piece is made of local terra cotta that has been burnished and inscribed.
